Week 9: The Toucan
March 1st, 2026
- Got starry eyed again on Autotrader and now, only 9 months after getting my last one, I'm changing my car again. It really isn't a good habit. I lose a few thousand every time I do it. If I'd saved or invested all that cash over the last 5 years I'd be much more pleased with myself. I need to stop doing this.
- The problem with car buying (for me, anyway) is the lack of friction. Once you make an online enquiry, you're just a phone call and a few clicks away from completing the entire process. Buying a car used to take time and effort, and so there were lots of points at which you could question yourself. Now it's all done and dusted before you know it.
- It was 17C in London last week and so half the company decamped at 5pm to the Toucan in Soho Square. It's complete chaos, with people spilling out all over the streets. A nice evening with nice Guinness. The last time I drank there was with Austen and Rick, probably over 25 years ago.
- I was away for Valentine's Day, and got grief when I got back for not having phoned and not buying presents. Despite, for all the previous years I can remember, us both agreeing we wouldn't do that. Lesson learned: better be safe than sorry.
